The Lost Colony of Roanoke : How did an entire American colony vanish into thin air?

American history is filled with terrifying and bizarre stories, but none holds a mystery quite like the tale of Roanoke, a small island in North Carolina. This isn't a fictional ghost story, but a historical fact. In 1587, 115 people from England—including innocent children and women—suddenly vanished from the face of the earth overnight, as if they had never existed. Today, we'll analyze this entire case in a way that will leave you thinking.

Introduction:

The Roanoke Colony, famously known as the 'Lost Colony,' was Sir Walter Raleigh's second attempt to establish the first permanent English settlement in North America. Founded in 1587, the colony had mysteriously vanished by 1590, becoming one of the most enduring unsolved mysteries in American history. This report provides detailed information on the history of the Roanoke Colony, the theories surrounding its disappearance, and the efforts to solve this mystery.

History of the Roanoke Colony:

Early Expeditions (1584-1586)

Sir Walter Raleigh received a charter to colonize North America in 1584. That same year, an exploratory expedition led by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe scouted Roanoke Island. They found the region favorable and established contact with local Native American tribes, particularly the Secotan and Croatoan. In 1585, a military colony was established on Roanoke Island under the leadership of Ralph Lane. This colony faced poor relations with local tribes and a lack of supplies. A resupply mission by Sir Richard Grenville was delayed, and Lane abandoned the colony with Sir Francis Drake in 1586. Grenville arrived later and left behind a small detachment to protect his claim before returning.

The story begins: A new hope in a new world

This was an era when the world's powerful nations were locked in a race to establish their dominion over American soil. Queen Elizabeth I of Britain (England) desired to establish the first permanent English settlement in America. To this end, an artist and explorer named John White was appointed as the leader.

In July 1587, a group of 115 English citizens, led by John White, landed on Roanoke Island. In their hearts, these people carried the hope of a new and prosperous life. Just a few days after their arrival, John White's daughter gave birth to a baby girl, who was named 'Virginia Dare.' She was the first English child to be born on American soil. However, neither this innocent child nor the entire colony had any inkling of what lay in store for them.

The Crisis and John White's Predicament

The first few weeks went smoothly enough, but soon, difficulties began to mount for these new settlers. They lacked the proper experience for farming, the local climate was ill-suited to them, and—most critically—their relations with certain neighboring Native American (tribal) tribes had deteriorated severely. Food supplies were dwindling rapidly.

The entire colony implored John White to return to England and bring back aid, weapons, and provisions from the Queen. With a heavy heart, John White departed for England, leaving behind his daughter, his son-in-law, and his infant granddaughter, Virginia, on that very island. As he left, he issued a strict instruction to the settlers: "If, for any reason, you decide to abandon this site and relocate elsewhere, carve the name of your new destination onto a tree or a post. Furthermore, if you are forced to leave due to a grave emergency or an attack, be sure to carve a cross (+) symbol above the name."

The three Years That Changed Everything

When John White arrived in England, fate played a cruel trick on him. At that very moment, a fierce naval war erupted between England and Spain. Fearing the Spanish Navy (the Armada), the King of England imposed a ban on all private vessels venturing out to sea. John White struggled desperately, but he could find no ship to take him back to America.

It took John White—who had gone merely to procure supplies—a full three years to return to Roanoke Island.

Silence, Empty Homes, and a Strange Word

In August 1590, when the war had ended, John White finally returned by ship to the shores of Roanoke Island. It was evening, and from a distance, he observed smoke rising from the direction of the island. He assumed his people must be cooking a meal there. Overjoyed, the sailors sang English songs at the top of their lungs so that their people would know that help had arrived.

But when they disembarked onto the shore the following morning, the scene that greeted them chilled everyone to the bone:

The entire settlement was deserted: there was not a single human soul to be found. A strange and eerie silence hung heavy in the air all around.

The houses were gone:

the homes that had been built with such immense effort had been dismantled and removed with great care—as if the inhabitants had departed in a highly organized and deliberate manner.

Belongings lay scattered:

some of John White’s personal chests, which he had buried in the ground, had been dug up, and their contents—his pictures and books—had rotted away.

Most baffling of all was the complete absence of any evidence of struggle, bloodshed, or hasty departure. Neither were any skeletons found, nor were there any signs of an attack.

A Mysterious Code Carved into a Tree: CROATOAN

Just then, John White’s gaze fell upon a heavy post at the main entrance of the settlement. Carved into that post in clear, distinct letters was a single word—CROATOAN. Additionally, on the bark of a nearby tree, only three letters were carved—CRO.

White immediately scanned his surroundings to see if there was a sign of a cross (+), which would have signaled distress. However, nowhere within the entire settlement was a cross to be found. This implied that the inhabitants had departed of their own free will, and in safety. But where had they gone? 'Croatoan' was, in fact, the name of a neighboring island situated just 50 miles (approximately 80 kilometers) to the south of Roanoke Island. A friendly indigenous tribe named the Croatoan resided there, and their chieftain, 'Manteo,' was a good friend of the English. John White became fully convinced that his people had relocated to Croatoan Island in order to save their lives and search for food.

However, fate intervened once again. That very night, a violent storm struck, snapping the anchors and ropes of John White's ship. Due to a shortage of drinking water and adverse weather conditions, the ship's captain refused to proceed further; consequently, they were compelled to return to England without ever reaching Croatoan Island. John White never saw his granddaughter or his people again.

Full Analysis: What Exactly Happened to Those 115 People? (Main Theories)

Historians and scientists have conducted years of research to solve this mystery. Primarily, five  major theories have emerged:

1. Assimilating with the Tribals (The Most Logical Theory)

Most modern historians believe that when no aid arrived from England for three years, the 115 settlers relocated to Croatoan Island to escape starvation. There, they began living alongside the local Native Americans, adopted their customs, and gradually became part of their tribe.

Evidence: Years later, when other Englishmen arrived in the region, they observed that some of the tribespeople had brown or blue eyes and brown hair, and spoke a few words resembling English.

2. Starvation and Disease

another theory is that the colonists died due to starvation and disease. Shortly after the arrival of the colonists in 1587, the region suffered a severe three-year drought, leading to food shortages even for the Native Americans. However, John White found no graves upon his return, which weakens the theory that disease or starvation destroyed the entire colony.

3. Spanish Attack

Some believe that the Spanish may have attacked the colony. In 1587, Spain and England were at war, and the Spanish were aware of an English colony's presence in the Outer Banks. However, when John White returned in 1590, he found no signs of a Spanish attack in the village.

4. Relocation to Chesapeake Bay

There is also a theory that the colonists moved to the Chesapeake Bay, the original intended location for the colony by Sir Walter Raleigh. About 20 years later, Jamestown colonists asked local Native Americans about the Roanoke settlers and heard that many colonists were killed in a battle. However, no archaeological evidence of the Roanoke Colony has been found in the Chesapeake Bay area.

5. Relocation to Albemarle Sound

Another theory suggests that the colonists moved to the Albemarle Sound, further inland from the ocean. On a map created by John White, there is a patch covering a fort-like symbol about 50 miles inland, near present-day Bertie County. White had instructed the colonists to move 50 miles inland if they left Roanoke Island. English artifacts have been found in this area, but they have not been definitively linked to the Lost Colony.

Conclusion:

The mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke remains unsolved today and continues to be one of the most fascinating chapters in American history. While many theories exist, the theory of assimilation with the Croatoan people is most supported by archaeological evidence. Research and archaeological work continue to solve this mystery, and new clues may emerge in the future.
