The Kadaknath Chicken: A Journey from the Jungle to the Farm

Natural Habitat and Lifestyle :

Before gaining popularity across the Indian mainstream, it had existed naturally for centuries in the wilderness of Dhar, Jhabua, and Alirajpur districts of Madhya Pradesh, completely like a wild bird.

Before it became known to the general public and scientists, it was used by the locals for food and other cultural and religious purposes.

This was a very fast, agile and aggressive wild cock. Due to its feathers, skin, blood and bones being black, it was called "Kalamasi" by the locals. The high amount of melanin gives it this amazing color.
Due to high rates of hunting it was on the verge of extinction.

Scientific discovery and research 

The first systematic scientific study and genetic research on Kadaknath began in the 1960s. Animal scientists from the Madhya Pradesh Animal Husbandry Department and agricultural universities studied. When scientists tested its black meat in the laboratory, the results sent shockwaves through the country's agricultural and poultry sectors.
Scientists have discovered that this is neither a disease nor merely a case of ordinary black pigmentation; rather, it represents a natural marvel within its genetic makeup known as 'fibromelanosis.' The most significant revelation is that, compared to ordinary chickens, its meat contains:
A significantly higher protein content (exceeding approximately 25%).

Extremely low levels of fat and cholesterol (ranging from just 0.73% to 1.05%)
 making it beneficial even for patients with heart conditions.
An abundance of iron.

From wild to the Farm
 
Since it was entirely wild, it laid very few eggs and could not survive in human settlements.
The Government of Madhya Pradesh and scientists together established the first Kadaknath Breeding Center in Jhabua.
Through years of hard work, scientists domesticated it—meaning they developed the technique to raise it on farms and hatch its eggs using machines (incubators). Because of this, it is being reared in every corner of the country today

GI Tag 

Originally known simply as "Kalamasi," this bird became known as "Kadaknath" due to its tenacious nature, strong immunity, and strong taste. In 2018, it was officially awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag as a unique breed of Madhya Pradesh."
